Battle Training Facility – DALI Lighting Controls

Sector: Government (Military)

This was somewhat different from the standard DALI lighting controls project!

We were invited by the electrical contractor to provide the controls element for this purpose built, four level training facility. The scope was to provide DALI lighting controls for this virtually windowless building (daylight harvesting was not required!) and also provide relay control for the doors.

The new $46m SAS training facility will also be used by other agencies including fire and police.

We always ensure health & safety requirements are fully met, but this project took things to a whole new level as defence services trained alongside our technicians with practise firing exercises going on around!

The official opening concluded with a bang, as the SAS created an explosion whilst some of their team arrived by helicopter before abseiling down the outside of the new building.  See video below.

The facility, in Ardmore, Auckland, took two years and $46 million to build, and will supersede the older facility at Papakura.

The new premises include facilities for all-weather training, live firing, use of helicopters, and scenario training based on specific environments and structures such as, aircraft fuselages, ship’s bridges, and public transport.

Chief of Defence Force, Lieutenant General (LTGEN) Tim Keating, in the New Zealand Defence Force media release, said the Battle Training Facility will primarily be used by the SAS; however it is an important resource for the whole of NZDF.

“This is a capability that is of significant benefit to the whole of the NZDF and it is futureproofed in its design and built to a world class standard.”
