Lighting Control Integration for a Critical Healthcare Environment

Delivering infrastructure within a forensic mental health facility demands more than technical capability. It requires clarity, trust, and the ability to perform under pressure.

The Mason Clinic project, delivered for the Waitematā District Health Board, is a strong example of how Intelligent Environments partners with electrical contractors to achieve that outcome.

Project Overview

Caldwell Levesque was engaged to deliver the full electrical and communications scope for the Mason Clinic – a highly specialised forensic mental health facility designed to support patients within a secure, controlled environment.

As part of this, Intelligent Environments was brought in to design, supply, and integrate the lighting control system across the site.

From the outset, the project required close coordination across multiple stakeholders, with a particular focus on system performance, compliance, and seamless integration into the broader building ecosystem.

Early Engagement That Set the Tone

The relationship between Caldwell Levesque and Intelligent Environments began during the tender phase.

Working alongside the team early allowed Intelligent Environments to contribute to pricing, refine the lighting control design, and ensure the solution was aligned with both project requirements and real-world delivery constraints.

This early-stage collaboration meant that by the time the project moved forward, there was already a clear, aligned approach in place – reducing friction and setting a strong foundation for delivery.

A Working Relationship Built on Clarity

From Caldwell Levesque’s perspective, the working relationship was simple:

“Clear and honest.”

That clarity carried through the entire project – across communication, coordination, and decision-making.

In complex healthcare environments where multiple systems intersect, this level of transparency becomes critical. It ensures issues are surfaced early, decisions are made quickly, and the project continues to move forward without unnecessary delays.

Technical Delivery: Integration That Matters

One of the defining aspects of the project was the integration of the lighting control system into the Building Management System (BMS).

This is where Intelligent Environments’ capability stood out.

Rather than treating lighting as an isolated system, the team ensured it was fully integrated into the wider building infrastructure – enabling centralised control, improved operational efficiency, and better long-term performance for the facility.

Performing Under Pressure

Large-scale healthcare projects rarely run without challenges and Mason Clinic was no exception.

Tight timelines, complex coordination, and particularly the intricacies around BMS integration required the team to stay agile.

According to Project Manager Scott Guyatt:

There were many unforeseen challenges… however, Intelligent Environments were able to pivot and adapt well – especially around the BMS integration which was tricky.

This ability to adapt, without losing momentum, was a key factor in keeping the project on track.

The Moment That Mattered

One of the most critical stages of the project came during system witnessing.

With multiple elements requiring sign-off, and pressure mounting across the programme, Intelligent Environments stepped in to take ownership of their scope.

With Rebecca and her team’s support at this time, it made my job easier knowing this was effectively under control.

This wasn’t just about technical delivery – it was about reducing pressure on the wider project team and ensuring confidence at a crucial stage of completion.

A Partner, Not Just a Subcontractor

The outcome of the Mason Clinic project wasn’t just a successfully delivered lighting control system.

It reinforced a working relationship built on trust, capability, and consistency.

I know what I will be getting with Rebecca and her team from Intelligent Environments. They are honest, clear, transparent, and proactive in delivering practical solutions that meet both client and end-user requirements.

They actively help achieve successful project delivery… and are a subcontract partner I’m more than willing and looking forward to working with again.

That sentiment is already translating into future work, with Caldwell Levesque engaging Intelligent Environments on upcoming projects.

What This Means for Future Projects

For clients, consultants, and contractors, the Mason Clinic project demonstrates how Intelligent Environments operates:

  • Early engagement that strengthens design and delivery
  • Clear, direct communication throughout the project lifecycle
  • Strong technical capability, particularly in system integration
  • The ability to adapt under pressure without compromising outcomes
  • A proactive approach focused on overall project success

In complex environments especially healthcare these factors are what separate a supplier from a true project partner.
