Terminology Explained

As the ‘Internet of Things’ (IOT) becomes a reality, building technology is less about the products, and more about the glue that joins them together. Technology integration is the way that glue is applied, and how easily the users of the ‘environment’ can control the space. Intelligent Environments are your building technology partner, working with you to determine the technology that is to be controlled, and the most robust way to integrate those technologies.

What should be controlled?

Building technology is advancing daily, and a fully integrated system can control virtually anything electrical. In a commercial building this will include lighting control and audio visual systems required for collaboration technology, and more. A ‘connected home’ will similarly include lighting and all audio visual elements, plus the ability to handle the everyday mundane tasks around the house: turning lights on at dusk and off at bedtime, lowering the blinds, setting the alarm, and so on.

Commercial Buildings

In the workplace, laptops, tablets, smartphones are now essential tools for conducting business. Boardrooms and conference rooms may still be required, but huddle spaces are quickly gaining popularity for informal meetings, and temporary ‘homes’ for employees without an office base. Collaborative technology plays a large part in any modern business and different spaces have different requirements, incorporating anything from webcams, video-conferencing, table-top or wireless technology to fully holistic audio visual solutions. Lighting control systems automate how the lights re-act dependent on ambient light levels, occupancy (or non-occupancy) etc. There may be a BMS (building management system) that supposedly provides ‘over arching’ control and information on the entire building, and can report on potential energy saving opportunities, etc. Intelligent Environments Ltd partners with designers, consultants, electrical contractors, IT solution providers and more, to assist in providing a full integrated solution encompassing all your business needs.

Home Automation

It may seem cool initially to astound the neighbours with the coloured light show around the pool, or show off your ability to play a different sound track in every room of the house, and alter the volume from your iPhone. Ironically however, those ‘expensive features’ that wow you initially, will probably rarely be used.

Your home automation system should be designed around your family’s needs, your lifestyle, and your budget. Take some time to consider how your family use the home (or plan to use it if it’s not yet built). What is important to you? Don’t be distracted by those ‘wow’ factors which will gobble up your budget but contribute little to the functionality of your home.

You will get some ideas from the residential section of our website, but start to make a list of features you absolutely MUST HAVE, and what you would LIKE TO HAVE, if budget allows.

Concentrate your efforts on what will assist your household to run more smoothly and efficiently. If you are on a limited budget focus first on things that will bring you peace of mind, and consider saving other things to be added later.

To assist, we’ve included what we see as the major components of a home automation system. You can explore ‘room by room’ or view the different ‘solutions’ via the dropdown menu under ‘Residential’ in the top menu.

Sports Facilities/Entertainment or Hospitality Venues

Similarly today’s leisure facilities incorporate an every growing range of technologies.

Booking systems for sports fields, conference rooms etc may need to integrate with lighting and audio visual systems. Lighting and background music has a vital part to play in creating the right ambience in entertainment venues, and systems often requires complex programming to provide a full range of required functions. Users of such facilities expect simple connectivity for BYOD (bring your own device).

Intelligent Environments have a wealth of experience in making the complex, simple. Speak to us directly about what you are wanting to achieve, or have your lighting or AV consultant contact us for you.
